Blue Guru Games is still a relatively unknown name within the industry, and yet the quality of their games speaks for itself – great presentation, interesting features, huge wins – these guys seem to know exactly what they are doing, so I’m excited to check out their latest game Totem Link today! Blue Guru doesn’t just list the maximum payout of their games on the paytable, instead opting to run a large-scale simulation which resulted in a top win of 6,344x the bet. As for the rest of the important statistics, Totem Link uses 40 fixed paylines, whilst the RTP is slightly below average at 95.23%.
The headline feature is a free spins bonus round which includes “wild reels”, an extra feature that promises to transform one or more of the centre reels into full stacks of wilds on every bonus round spin. There’s a secondary feature available, too, named the “Spinning Totem Game”, but it’s really a jackpot bonus which can pay one of three prizes – 50x, 500x, or 5,000x your bet. Both features are available on the bonus buy menu if those options are allowed in your country.

Totem Link Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect from a game named “Totem Link”. I’ve seen a few games with similar titles, such as Totem Thunder, and they’ll usually have various totem blocks that create entire poles once they stack up on the reels. However, this game has gone in a slightly different direction, as the reels are filled with various animals, which you might expect to encounter if you were crazy enough to wander out on the plains of prehistoric North America. There are buffalo, eagles, bears, wolves, and even a leopard, whilst the wild symbols have a totem style design that looks great and gives the game a unique look.
Of those symbols, the Buffalo has been chosen as the leader of the pack with a decent payout of 50x your bet for each full pay line of five-of-a-kind. The Eagle sits in the second-place position, but his return of 25x is just half of that offered by the buffalo – I’m not sure how these animals would feel if they knew they were being ranked this way! The Bear is next, paying 20x the bet for a full pay line, followed by the Wolf at 15x and, last but not least, the Leopard, with a return of 10x for five-of-a-kind. Considering that this game offers 40 fixed pay lines, these numbers seem quite reasonable, especially when you consider that these symbols all appear in stacked configurations. That being said, I did notice as I was testing the game that five-of-a-kind combinations of picture symbols seem to be extremely rare.
There are two large up and down arrow buttons on either side of the spin control at the bottom of the screen, but they are so far apart that I got confused at first and thought the left-hand button was supposed to open a menu! Once I got over my brain-dead moment, I soon realised that these buttons allow you to choose a bet between €0.20 and €200.00 per spin, and you can also click on your current bet in the middle of these buttons to access a quick menu of 16 different wager amounts.
Base Game & Modifiers
Regular gameplay takes place on a 5×4 playfield, which is slightly larger than the average game but is a perfect fit for the 40 fixed paylines. You’ll need at least three matching symbols on a payline starting from the left to bag yourself some winnings, and whilst there are no base game modifiers, the two different bonuses do a reasonable job of breaking up play and preventing you from getting bored.
Wild Symbols
A short, special mention for the wild symbols of Totem Link because these wilds also act as the triggering symbols for the free spin bonus round! It’s always great when the special symbols double up in this way, and it’s something that I wish more games would offer. The only downer is that the wilds do not appear on reels one or five.
Totem Link Slot Bonus Features
Hitting three of those magic wilds on the centre three reels will trigger the free games bonus round. Unfortunately, there’s no cash payout for hitting these “scatters”, but I think the fact that they are wild more than makes up for this.
Free Spins
During this mode, you are guaranteed at least one wild reel on every free spin. Wild reels can appear on reels two, three, or four, and you can also hit two or three of them on a single spin – if you are lucky! I saw two wild reels appear a couple of times while testing this game, but I never managed to get all three. I hope you have better luck!
The totem symbols are removed from the reels during the free spins bonus, which I am completely fine with, as they would otherwise act as blockers which could get in the way of other winning combinations.
Spinning Totem Feature
You’ll need to hit at least eight of the special totem symbols to trigger this alternative bonus round, which isn’t easy, believe me! Whenever a totem symbol lands during this feature, it will pay you the cash prize shown before becoming locked in place for the remainder of the feature.
The Spinning Totem bonus is a three-spin feature, which means you start with three lives and need to hit at least one symbol each spin to reset your lives back to the initial three. The bonus will end if you do not catch at least one additional symbol for four consecutive spins.
Initially, you have plenty of space to land extra symbols, which makes it much easier, but as you fill up the grid with symbols, your chances of hitting any further symbols are reduced. If you complete an entire reel with totem symbols, then the reel will be upgraded to the next tier, and its contents will be removed, creating additional space for extra symbols.
As you progress through these “tiers”, the size of the prizes which will land on that reel increases. Once all reels have been upgraded at least once, jackpot prizes will start to land on the reels. These jackpots range between 50x and 5,000x your bet, as shown on the main screen.
Bonus Buy
You have two options in the feature buy area – for 60x the regular spin cost, you can purchase a free spins feature, whilst the spinning totem bonus costs twice as much at 120x your bet. Both of these numbers seem very reasonable to me, and I’d be willing to try these options a few times when playing for real money.
Totem Link Slot Review Final Thoughts
Once again, Blue Guru Games has thoroughly impressed me with the quality of its online slots. Totem Link isn’t their best-looking game to date, but I had great results in terms of winnings during my time testing the game and have added this to my list of slots to try next time I’m playing for cash. Recommended!
